Correspondence, 1875-1929.

The papers contain typed and handwritten correspondence from the law firm of Ira Colby and Son, Claremont, N.H., also correspondence between Ira Colby, Jr., his son Ira G. Colby III ("Don", Dartmouth 1894) and various clients, law firms, courts, and businesses in New England. The Colby firm handled settlements regarding wills, lands, and bill collection. Also contains correspondence with family and friends concerning Dartmouth College and teaching posts Colby, Jr., held in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Other materials include diaries for 1850, 1882, 1885-86, alumni correspondence with Dartmouth College, and correspondence of Louise M. Colby with her sister Lucy A. Holt.

Ira Colby was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on Jan. 11, 1831, the son of a successful farmer. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1857, read law at a N.H. law firm, and was admitted to the N.H. bar in 1860. His law firm was among the most prominent in New Hampshire during the late 1800s.
